Eastmont baseball team shuts out Sumner

EAST WENATCHEE ? Cole Sexton recorded two hits in the fifth inning, including a run-scoring single to plate Kevin Fagg, and the Eastmont baseball team went on to beat Sumner 10-0 on Saturday at Dan White Field.

?(Sexton?s hit) was huge at the time,? Wildcats coach Brandon Schmitten said. ?That put us up by two after going five innings in a one-run game.?

Nathan Zydema then hit a single to get the Wildcats? six-run fifth inning rolling.

Kai Spence made it to first base on an error, which loaded the bases for Chase Lewallen, who scored two on a single.

Jacob Crone pitched five innings, striking out six and allowing two hits. He worked himself out of a fourth-inning jam with by catching a line drive for the third out.

Tyler Hilliard pitched the sixth inning, allowing no hits and striking out two.

Wenatchee 4, Mercer Island 1

The Panthers capped off opening weekend with another dominant performance at the mound, solid defense and an improved effort at the plate to start the season 2-0.

Kyle Blankenship pitched a complete game, recording three strikeouts and giving up just two hits and a run to record the win. Blankenship demonstrated good control from start to finish.

?He was just throwing strikes and his defense was playing behind him,? coach Jeff Zehnder said. ?We played great defense tonight.?

Wenatchee made strides offensively as well. Drew Holmberg led the team with two runs batted in, and Jacob Prater went 2-for-4.

?We were putting ourselves in beter hitting counts from the first at bat,? Zehnder said. ?The kids did a great job of working ahead in the count and it paid off in the end.?

Ephrata 2-9, Selah 3-6

Ephrata split a doubleheader with visiting Selah.

The Tigers lost a pitchers? duel in the first game ? Ephrata?s Justin Van Ess pitched 10 innings, and Selah?s starter went nine.

In the seciond game, Ephrata batters took advantage of runners in scoring position.

BOYS SOCCER

Wenatchee 3, Shadle Park 2

The Panthers struck first on a header by Tyler Miller 11 minutes into the first half. Shadle Park answered two minutes later with a tying goal, but Wenatchee?s E.J. Hurt scored for a 2-1 halftime lead.

Carson Grater, who assisted the first goal, scored Wenatchee?s third goal on an assist from Hurt, who cleared the ball in the midfield.

Cascade 5, Omak 0

The Kodiaks took a 1-0 lead into halftime after a goal from Jonathan Valdez and completely took over in the second half, netting four goals.

Coach Pete Spiegel credited some midfield adjustments for the surge of scores.

Also, Omar Solis ? who didn?t play in the first half ? was available in the second half and made his presence felt with two goals. Esteban Gonzalez and Rene Soperanez also netted scores for Cascade.

Central Valley 4, Eastmont 3

After trailling 2-1 at the half, Eastmont?s Hernan Mendoza and Joel Villa each scored to take a 3-2 lead in the second half. With 11 minutes remaining Central Valley tied and finally scored the winning goal in the last minute of regulation.

Quincy 9, Tonasket 0

The Jackrabbits focused on making solid passes and spreading the ball around to create the opportunities that helped them to a 9-0 victory in Tonasket.

Freshman Francisco Alejandrez Quincy?s second and third goals, and played a factor in creating openings for teammates. Eduardo Perez, Christian Alejandrez and Danial Contreras each scored twice.

TENNIS

Coke Classic Invite

The Wenatchee boys tied for first place with Lewis and Clark with 49 points and had two of their three doubles pairings take first place. at the Coke Classic Invite in Yakima.

Sohaill Qazi and Scott Willis finished first at the No. 1 doubles spot ,and Chris Khies and Kyle Norland finished first at the No. 2 doubles slot.

Drew Messler and Logan Bixon Manthie finished second after losing in the finals at the No. 3 doubles spot, and Lucas Tilly finished third at the No. 1 singles position.

The Panther girls finished the Coke Classic Invite with an individual champion, a doubles runner-up and a fourth-place finish in the eight-team meet.

Analise Nelson defeated Danielle Tanasse of West Valley Yakima 6-2, 6-4 to claim the No. 3 singles championship, and Caroline Taylor and Carle Heuple lost to Bailey Burns and Savanna Foley of Hermaston 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 in the championship match at the No. 2 doubles spot.

?I was very very pleased with their performance,? coach Norm Armstrong said of the sophomore pair. ?...They?re young players and they were just very aggressive, they played doubles the way I like it played. They were coming to the net, they were volleying, they were hitting it over the net.?

The Panthers finished with 36 points, and Eastmont finished third overall with 40 points. West Yakima Valley won the invite with 51 points.

SOFTBALL

Cashmere 10-18, Lake Roosevelt 0-2

Cashmere racked up 23 combined hits in its doubleheader sweep of visiting Lake Roosevelt.

in the opener, Hannah Lynch had three hits and three runs batted in and struck out eight batters for the Bulldogs.

Candice Brunner had three hits for Cashmere in the second contest.
