Apple doubles iPhone sales in 1Q (AP)

NEW YORK ? The iPhone is taking over Apple.

For the first time, the device that changed how people use mobile phones, accounts for more than half of the behemoth company's sales.

Apple Inc. on Tuesday said it sold 37 million iPhones in the last three months of 2011, vastly exceeding analyst estimates and propelling the company to record quarterly results.

The phone accounted for 53 percent of Apple's revenue in the quarter. Though it has other hit products, like MacBooks and the iPad, they can't keep up with the iPhone, whose sales more than doubled over last year from an already high level.

The sales mean Apple is set to regain the position it briefly held earlier last year of being the world's largest maker of smartphones. Nokia Corp., the earlier No. 1, in transition to a new generation of smartphones, and more recent competitor Samsung Electronics Co. has announced preliminary figure of 35 million smartphones sold in the October to December period.

October saw Apple launching the iPhone 4S in the U.S. and some other countries. The phone was delayed for a few months, which meant that Apple's results for the July to September quarter were uncharacteristically tepid.

It came back with a vengeance in the holiday season. On Tuesday, Apple said net income in the fiscal first quarter, which ended Dec. 31, was $13.06 billion, or $13.87 per share. That was up 118 percent from $6 billion, or $6.43 per share, a year ago.

Analysts polled by FactSet were expecting earnings of $10.04 per share for the latest quarter, Apple's fiscal first.

Revenue was $46.33 billion, up 73 percent from a year ago. Analysts were expecting $38.9 billion.

"It was a pristine quarter," said ISI Group analyst Brian Marshall. "The investment community has never seen a company like this, inside or outside technology."

The stellar performance could re-establish Apple as the world's most valuable company, again toppling Exxon Mobil Corp. Apple first unseated Exxon last summer, and the two have been trading places since then.

Apple shares rose $30.67, or 7.3 percent, to $451.08 in extended trading, after the company released its results. If that rally sticks in Wednesday's regular trading sessions, Apple's market value will be hovering around $420 billion. Exxon's market value stood at $417.9 billion Tuesday, while Apple's was $391.9 billion at the end of regular trading.

Apple shipped 15.4 million iPads in the quarter, again more than doubling sales over the same quarter last year. The November launch of Amazon.com Inc.'s $199 Kindle Fire tablet didn't appear to put much of a dent in the iPad's sales, as some analysts predicted it would.

Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer said the company expects earnings of $8.50 per share in the current quarter, and sales of $32.5 billion. Both figures are above the average estimate of analysts polled by FactSet, even though Apple usually low-balls its estimates.

The Cupertino, Calif. company ended the quarter with a cash balance of a staggering $97.6 billion. That's more than enough to buy Citigroup Inc. outright, or issue a special dividend of $100 per Apple share.

For years, investors have been frustrated with Apple's unwillingness to put the cash to use, but complaints have been muted as Apple continues to generate record-breaking results and as the stock price keeps rising. Apple executives have said the cash hoard gives the company flexibility to make acquisitions and long-term supply deals.

Apple's results lifted shares of smaller companies that supply chips for the iPhone, like TriQuint Semiconductor, up 7.7 percent, Cirrus Logic Inc., up 6.8 percent, Broadcom Corp., up 4.2 percent, and Skyworks Solutions Inc., up 3.7 percent.

Apple co-founder and longtime CEO Steve Jobs died Oct. 5, just as the record-breaking quarter started.

Turkey's Erdogan lambasts France on genocide law (Reuters)

ANKARA (Reuters) ? Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan attacked the French parliament on Tuesday for passing a "discriminatory and racist" bill which makes it illegal to deny the mass killing of Armenians by Ottoman Turks nearly a century ago was genocide.

With passions running high in Turkey on Monday's Senate vote, one newspaper denounced the French president as "Satan Sarkozy" and some politicians have already suggested dredging up France's own colonial history.

However, Erdogan appeared keen to avoid an immediate rupture with Paris, saying there was still hope that NATO ally France "would correct its mistake" and that any retaliatory measures would be held back, depending on French actions.

"We will not allow anyone to gain political benefit at the expense of Turkey; the bill which was passed in France is clearly discriminatory, racist," Erdogan said.

"We will adopt a rational and dignified stance, we will implement our measures step by step. Right now we are still in a period of patience," he told parliamentary deputies of his AK Party.

Encouraged by their success in Paris, the influential Armenian diaspora is expected to re-double its efforts in the United States, which like France is in a presidential election year, to have Washington call what happened a genocide.

Many Turks see the French bill, which the lower house of parliament also backed in December, as an insult to their nation, a travesty of history and an infringement on free speech.

As Erdogan spoke, a couple of hundred protesters gathered outside the French embassy in Ankara and consulate in Istanbul in peaceful demonstrations.

The bill now goes to President Nicolas Sarkozy to be ratified. Mostly Muslim Turkey accuses Sarkozy of trying to win the votes of 500,000 ethnic Armenians in France in the two-round presidential vote on April 22 and May 6.

KEEP CALM

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe, who was personally against the bill proposed by Sarkozy's party, said the new law was "ill-timed," but called on Ankara to remain calm.

"We need good relations with it and we need to get through this excessive phase," Juppe said on Canal+ television. "We have very important economic and trade ties. I hope the reality of the situation will not be usurped by emotions."

Turkey, a member of NATO and the World Trade Organization, may be limited in its response by its international obligations. However, newspapers listed possible measures that Ankara might take against France.

These included recalling its ambassador from Paris and telling the French ambassador to go home, reducing diplomatic ties to charge d'affaires level, and closing Turkish airspace and waters to French military aircraft and vessels.

Speaking shortly before Monday's Senate vote, Erdogan said the issue of future official visits to France would be thrown into uncertainty if it passed the bill.

French firms stand to lose out in bids for defense contracts and other mega-projects such as nuclear power stations.

Turkey may also seek to press allegations that French actions in Algeria in the 1950s and 1960s during the North African country's independence struggle, amounted to genocide.

However, Armenian President Serzh Sarksyan sent a grateful letter to Sarkozy.

"This is a historic day for the Armenians all over the world - in Armenia, in France, everywhere," he wrote. "This is an unforgettable day, and it will be inscribed in gold into the centuries-long history of the Armenian and French peoples."

"SATAN SARKOZY"

Morning headlines in Turkish newspapers were anything but calm. "A guillotine to free thought" said Star, while Aksam described the French move as "A guillotine to history."

"Shame on France" cried the Vatan daily. While Sozcu, a small newspaper that usually directs its scorn at Erdogan, found a new target with "Satan Sarkozy."

In contrast, most French newspapers carried small stories of the Senate vote in their inside pages.

Ankara's mayor has spoken of renaming the road where the French embassy is located to Algeria Street and erecting a memorial to Algerian victims of French colonial oppression in front of the embassy.

When the lower house backed the bill in December, Ankara cancelled all economic, political and military meetings with Paris and briefly recalled its ambassador for consultations.

Sarkozy is expected to ratify the bill before parliament is suspended in February before the presidential election.

However, it could still be rejected if about 60 lawmakers agree to appeal the decision at France's highest court and this body considers the text unconstitutional. The Constitutional Council would have one month to make its decision.

Turkish President Abudullah Gul urged French lawmakers to apply to the council to quash the bill. "They should not forget that this will leave a lasting mark on the Turkish people. If this (bill) becomes final, relations will certainly take a very different course," Gul said.

Relations between Ankara and Paris have been testy largely due to Sarkozy's opposition to Turkey's bid to join the EU, and the latest row further clouded Turkish relations with the bloc.

"It will blur their ties with Europe Union," said Doroth?e Schmid, head of the contemporary Turkey department at the Paris-based International Institute for Foreign Relations

(IFRI).

Turkey cannot impose economic sanctions on France, given its membership of the World Trade Organization and its customs union accord with Europe, but French firms could lose out on state-to-state-contracts, notably in the defense sector.

France is Turkey's fifth biggest export market and sixth biggest supplier of imports of goods and services, and bilateral

trade was $13.5 billion in the first 10 months of last year.

Armenia, backed by many historians and parliaments, says about 1.5 million Christian Armenians were killed in what is now eastern Turkey during World War One in a deliberate policy of genocide ordered by the Ottoman government.

The Ottoman empire was dissolved after the end of the war, but Turkish governments and most Turks feel the charge of genocide is an insult to their nation. Ankara argues there was heavy loss of life on both sides during fighting in the area.

A French Muslim businessman said on Tuesday that he had set up a 1 million euro fund to pay for any fines imposed as a result of the new genocide law.

Property dealer Rachid Nekkaz already set up a similar fund to cover fines for women who wear Muslim niqabs and burkas despite laws banning them in France and Belgium.

Some ethnic Armenians in Turkey saw the French move as unhelpful. "This only will provide more grounds to nationalism and reactions in Turkey," said Robert Koptas, editor of Agos, a Turkish-Armenian newspaper.

US beats Venezuela 1-0 on Clark's late goal

Jermaine Jones, Jose Velasquez

By BOB BAUM

updated 12:49 a.m. ET Jan. 22, 2012

GLENDALE, Ariz. - Ricardo Clark had barely played in the last six months. His last appearance for his German second-division team came in July, and this was his first game for the U.S. national squad since August.

Finally given a chance, he provided the goal that had eluded his team all night.

Clark headed Jermaine Jones' corner kick into the net in the 7th minute of stoppage time and the United States beat Venezuela 1-0 in a friendly on Saturday night.

U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann inserted Clark into the game in the 86th minute.

"Ricardo came in and you could see that he was struggling because he hasn't played for many months," Klinsmann said. "He was trying hard to catch up with the group and still not there because of that long stretch. But once on the field he is a player that is technically very gifted."

The U.S. had dominated play with nothing to show for it before Clark beat goalkeeper Jose Morales from 7 yards away for his third international goal and first since September 2009.

Venezuela was livid at the finish, upset with a series of calls and non-calls by officials that led to a series of events concluding with the winning goal.

Moments after Clark scored, Venezuela's Jose Velasquez was ejected with a red card. Venezuela drew four yellow cards to one for the United States.

"For us, it was sad to give up a goal in the 98th minute," Venezuela coach Cesar Farias said. "For us, this result leaves a sour taste and the way we lost, but the experience is important."

The first match between the countries in five years featured the "B" teams of both nations because the top players are with their professional squads.

An exception was Jones, who is playing with the national team while serving an eight-game suspension by the German soccer federation.

"It was a great cross," Clark said of the corner kick that led to the goal. "I found a good spot and made the most of it."

It was Clark's first game since the United States played Mexico on Aug. 10. He last scored in international competition against Trinidad and Tobago on Sept. 9, 2009.

The 28-year-old midfielder from Jonesboro, Ga., is ignominiously remembered for a play in the 2010 World Cup, when Ghana's Kevin-Prince Boateng stripped the ball from him and put the Black Stars ahead in the fifth minute. Ghana went on to eliminate the Americans 2-1 in overtime.

Jones, who served as U.S. captain for the game, was suspended when the German federation concluded he had intentionally stepped on the foot of star player Marco Reus during a break in the action of a German Cup game between Jones' team Schalke and Borussia Moenchengladbach.

The U.S. outshot Venezuela 15-6, many of the opportunities from short range, but the shots were errant, or Morales made one of his five saves.

Even though it was a struggle, Klinsmann liked what he saw from his young players.

"We had 10, 12 chances and they had no chances, we controlled completely and that gives them confidence," he said. "We wanted to give them a feeling of this type of game that they can play with these nations."

Morales was shaken up after he took a knee to the left thigh from American C.J. Sapong. The goalkeeper sat on the ground for several minutes until the decision was made to leave him in the game, an incident that led to the extended stopping time that featured the winning goal.

The United States beat a team from South America for the first time since a 3-1 win over Ecuador on March 25, 2007. The U.S. had 10 losses and three ties against teams from that continent since then.

The U.S .improved to 3-4-1 since former German World Cup star Klinsmann took over from Bob Bradley as coach last year.

Jones had one of the best chances for a goal but missed from point-blank range. The U.S. had also failed miserably on set plays until the game winner.

Venezuela had a scoring shot in the 62nd minute but Carlos Salazar's header went right into the hands of goalkeeper Bill Hamid. Moments later, the U.S. squad missed another chance when Teal Bunbury's shot off a breakaway was just right of the post.

Venezuela and the United States played for the fourth time. The U.S. leads the series 2-0-1.

Clark's goal was only the sixth for the U.S. teams in Klinsmann's eight games as coach.

Clark, a former player with Major League Soccer's Houston Dynamo, is with Eintracht Frankfurt but has fallen out of favor and hasn't been in a match for the team since July 25, the second game of the season.

The United States plays Panama in Panama City on Wednesday.

Hamid made his U.S. national team debut along with defender A.J. DeLaGarza, midfielder Graham Zusi and substitute Sapong.

(AP) ? Lee Evans had victory in his hands. Billy Cundiff had a tie game on his toe.

Two chances in the final 30 seconds to keep their Super Bowl hopes alive and the Baltimore Ravens let both slip away.

Evans was stripped after briefly hauling in Joe Flacco's pass in the back right corner of the end zone and, two plays later, Cundiff pushed a 32-yard field goal attempt wide left in Sunday's AFC championship game. The New England Patriots won 23-20 and the Ravens ended their season disappointed but not disgraced.

"We're grinders," said linebacker Ray Lewis, wiping his face with a towel in the quiet Ravens locker room. "We're coming home and we're coming home with smiles. But, most importantly, when we start back training, we're coming back (ticked) off. Why wouldn't we be?"

The Ravens gave the Patriots all they could handle.

The much-maligned Flacco played one of his best games of the season. The third-ranked Baltimore defense held Tom Brady without a touchdown pass for the first time in 36 games. And the Ravens moved from their 21-yard line to a second-and-1 at the Patriots 14 with 27 seconds left.

Plenty of time to at least tie the score.

On the next play, Evans had the pass in his grasp. But Sterling Moore, a rookie free agent who was cut once by the Patriots this season, arrived just in time to knock out the ball.

"I feel like I had it, but it came out," Evans said. "I don't know how to put it into words. Honestly, it's the most disappointing part of all of this that I feel personally that I let everybody down.

"It hit me right where you would want to be hit. It was a great pass by Joe and a play not completed by me. Nobody else can take the fault."

Ravens coach John Harbaugh thought the play should have been reviewed, but because coaches can't ask for a review in the last two minutes of a half, he was powerless.

"Obviously, in that situation I thought they would look at it," he said, "but they didn't. I have not talked to anybody, didn't get a chance to, so I don't know what the explanation is on that."

But the Ravens weren't done.

On the next play, needing a yard for a first down, Flacco threw toward Dennis Pitta. Again, Moore made a late move to knock the ball away.

Still, there was a chance to send the game into overtime. And Cundiff had kicked field goals of 48 and 44 yards a week earlier in a 20-13 win over the Houston Texans. He had made 10 of 12 field goals between 30 and 39 yards this season.

Not this time.

Morgan Cox snapped, Sam Koch held. Cundiff, the All-Pro kicker in the 2010 season, swung his leg.

On the Ravens sideline, jaws dropped and heads sank. There was a look of shock that such a dependable kicker had missed such a makeable kick.

"The timing was just a little off," Cundiff said. "I'm disappointed. I let my teammates down."

His teammates didn't think so. The kick was one of dozens of plays that affected the outcome.

"Not one play won or lost this game," Lewis said. "There's no 'Oh, Billy's the fault. Billy missed the (kick).' There's no freaking 'Billy missed the kick.' It happened. Move on."

Linebacker Terrell Suggs is moving away from football for now. He has no plans to watch the Super Bowl.

"If I'm not playing in it, it doesn't matter to me," he said. "No matter who wins, I lose."

Flacco will move on after answering his doubters by completing 22 of 36 passes for 306 yards, his third most of the season. He had two touchdowns but threw a costly interception that Brandon Spikes caught at the Patriots 31 and returned to the 50 midway through the fourth quarter.

On the next play, though, Jimmy Smith intercepted Brady's pass in the end zone.

Baltimore drove to the Patriots 30, but on third-and-3, Rice was stuffed for a 3-yard loss. After calling a timeout, the Ravens decided to go for it on fourth-and-6 instead of having Cundiff try a tying 51-yard field goal.

But Flacco couldn't find an open receiver, throwing the ball away and giving the Patriots possession with 2:46 remaining. The defense forced a punt, and Flacco began his final drive of the season with 1:44 left, 79 yards from the end zone.

He completed five of seven passes before the oh-so-close toss to Evans.

"He played his tail off," Ravens safety Bernard Pollard said, "and for the people who keep dogging him, man, if you never played this game, shut up, shut up, you know. He played his tail off."

And his pass to Evans was right on target. The celebration on Baltimore's sideline already had started.

"If you weren't celebrating, you weren't a Raven fan," said Lewis, dressed in a brown pinstripe suit after removing his uniform for the last time this season. "That's the irony of sports. It's a game of inches."

Inches that make all the difference between a chance for a championship and a promise for next season.

"We fell 15 seconds from having it," Suggs said, "so, please believe, it won't happen again."

EU formally adopts Iran oil embargo (AP)

BRUSSELS ? The European Union formally adopted an oil embargo Monday against Iran and a freeze of the assets of the country's central bank, part of sanctions meant to pressure the country to resume talks on its nuclear program.

Diplomats said the measures, which were adopted in Brussels by the EU's 27 foreign ministers, include an immediate embargo on new contracts for crude oil and petroleum products, while existing contracts will be allowed to run until July.

EU diplomats are calling the measure part of a twin track approach toward Iran: increase sanctions to discourage what they suspect is Iran's pursuit of nuclear weapons but emphasize at the same time the international community's willingness to talk. Iran says its nuclear program is exclusively for peaceful purposes.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague called the embargo part of "an unprecedented set of sanctions."

"I think this shows the resolve of the European Union on this issue," Hague said.

The EU also agreed to freeze the assets of the Iranian central bank. Together, the two measures are intended not only to pressure Iran to agree to talks but also to choke of funding for its nuclear activities.

In October, EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton sent a letter to Saeed Jalili, Iran's top nuclear negotiator, saying her goal was a negotiated solution that "restores international confidence in the exclusively peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear program."

She says she has not yet received a reply.

In advance of Monday's decision, negotiators worked hard to try to ensure that the embargo would punish only Iran ? and not EU member Greece, which is in dire financial trouble and relies heavily on low-priced Iranian oil.

The foreign ministers agreed to a review of the effects of the sanctions, to be completed by May 1, a diplomat said. He spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the subject before the official announcement. They agreed in principle to make up the costs Greece incurs as a result of the embargo.

"It is important to know what will happen to individual countries as a consequence of the sanctions," Ashton said before the meeting.

The National Council of Resistance of Iran, an exile group opposed to the country's clerical regime, welcomed the new sanctions and called for their implementation without delay.

"For over two decades, the Iranian Resistance has called for comprehensive oil and financial sanctions against the religious and terrorist dictatorship ruling Iran," Maryam Rajavi, the organization's president-elect, said in a statement.

The council, founded in 1981, is considered a terrorist organization by the United States, but not by the European Union.

"While the clerical regime is all out to obtain nuclear weapons, a five-month delay in putting these sanctions in full force provides a significant amount of time for this regime to implement its ominous plots," Rajavi said.

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said it was critical that action be taken.

"This is not a question of security in the region," he said. "It is a question of security in the world."

Officials: US drone strike killed Somali insurgent

A U.S. drone strike killed a British al-Qaida official fighting alongside insurgents in Somalia, officials said.

Three missiles fired from an unmanned aerial vehicle hit Bilal al-Berjawi's car on the outskirts of Mogadishu, according to a statement from the insurgent al-Kataib media foundation late Saturday. Berjawi was a Lebanese and British citizen who grew up in West London and fought in Afghanistan before going to Somalia in 2006.

"The martyr received what he wished for and what he went out for, as we consider of him and Allah knows him best, when, in the afternoon today, brother Bilal al-Berjawi was exposed to bombing in an outskirt of Mogadishu from a drone that is believed to be American," the statement said. "He was martyred immediately."

The strike was confirmed by a U.S. official in Washington. The official asked for anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

"Good riddance, and (I) hope al-Shabab leadership will come to their senses and cease the hostility in Somalia," said Omar Jamal, the first secretary in the Somali mission to the U.N., in an emailed statement.

Berjawi helped oversee recruitment, training and tactics for al-Shabab, who are fighting the weak U.N.-backed government. He was a close associate of late al-Qaida operative Fazul Abdullah Mohammed, who directed the 1998 bombings of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.

Berjawi is at least the fourth senior al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab commander killed in as many years. Last year, a Somali soldier shot dead Mohammed at a checkpoint and in 2009, U.S. soldiers killed Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan in a helicopter raid. In 2008, a U.S. airstrike killed reputed al-Qaida commander Aden Hashi Ayro and two dozen civilians.

Most observers say there are several hundred foreign fighters in Somalia, mainly clustered in training camps around the insurgents stronghold of Kismayo. Most of the foreigners are Africans from other nearby nations, but more than 40 Americans have also traveled to Somalia to join the insurgency, according to a report from the House Homeland Security Committee.

Many British citizens have also returned to Somalia and joined the fight on both sides. Berjawi was the second British citizen killed in Somalia in two days; on Friday an official al-Shabab Twitter feed displayed documents belonging to Said Abdi Jaras from London as proof that the Somali government official had been killed by al-Shabab in battle.

Somalia has not had a functioning government for 21 years. Currently the weak U.N.-backed government holds the capital with the support of 9,500 soldiers from Uganda, Djibouti, and Burundi. Other parts of the country not occupied by al-Shabab are held by friendly militias or Kenyan or Ethiopian troops. Both nations sent in troops amid concerns that Somalia's instability will leak over their borders.

Victim identified in Hollywood severed head case (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? A man whose severed head, hands and feet were found in the hills below the famed Hollywood sign overlooking Los Angeles was identified by the coroner's office on Friday as 66-year-old Hervey Coronado Medellin.

A mother and daughter who were walking dogs in a popular hiking area stumbled upon the Los Angeles resident's severed head earlier this week, and a search nearby later turned up hands and feet.

Investigators have so far been unable to say how Medellin died or came to be dismembered, nor have they given details about his life.

Homicide detectives were still questioning witnesses and potential suspects in the bizarre case, Los Angeles Police Department Lieutenant Andrew Neiman said. But little further information was being released because police have placed a security hold on the case, according to the coroner's office.

Neiman declined to comment on reports in the local media that a search warrant had been served at an apartment building in Hollywood in connection with the case.

"Most homicide investigations involve the service of search warrants and various locations, and certainly that is something that will probably be part of this investigation," he said.

Police said detectives had canvassed the area near the 4,200-acre Griffith Park in the heart of Los Angeles looking for clues or potential witnesses before the section of the park where the body parts were found reopened to the public on Friday.

Commander Andrew Smith said he believed that a bodyguard for actor Brad Pitt was among those witnesses interviewed but said the man was not considered a suspect.

The sensational case began on Tuesday when a mother and daughter walking dogs came across the head in a plastic bag and reported it to park rangers. The hands were found the following day in the same general area, one by a cadaver-sniffing dog and the other by a crime scene investigator.

Later on Wednesday, a coroner investigator discovered the feet, together, in the same area. Neiman said investigators theorize that the head, hands and feet were hidden together in the park and later scattered by animals.

"The hands and feet were found in the same general area and the head was in a different location," he said. "We believe an animal may have pulled that body part and the first hand away."

Police have found no link between the Hollywood Hills case and a torso found in Arizona missing a head, hands and feet, and said there was no evidence the man was a victim of organized crime or a serial killer.

The iconic Hollywood sign on Mount Lee above Los Angeles was built in the 1920s to promote a housing development and originally read "Hollywoodland." The last few letters deteriorated in the 1940s and the part that remained was restored in 1978.

Griffith Park, which sits in the hills above metropolitan Los Angeles, is the largest municipal park with an urban wilderness area in the United States, according to a city website.

University of Toronto to build $58-million Goldring Centre for sports

The University of Toronto is poised to break ground later this month on the Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport, a state-of-the-art hub for sport and exercise research, sport medicine and training and competition.

In the planning stages for several years, the estimated $58 million centre will house international level basketball and volleyball courts, a relocated and expanded David L. MacIntosh sport medicine clinic, a range of sport and exercise research labs and a strength and fitness centre accessible to all U of T students.

It will also be a venue where the university?s growing list of key partners can converge in support of the region?s top athletes.

?There has been a void within the high performance sport community,? said Prof. Ira Jacobs, dean of the Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education, under whose jurisdiction the centre will reside. multiple links:

?We need a place where researchers and scientists can collaborate with coaches, policy-makers, athletes and sport medicine specialists.?

The design-build project is being undertaken by EllisDon. The team includes architects MacLennan Jaunkalns Miller Architects Ltd. of Toronto and Patkau Architects Inc. of Vancouver.

Rosanne Lopers-Sweetman, chief administrative officer for the kinesiology and physical education faculty, said schematic design has been completed for the facility, which will have a gross floor area of 12,000 square metres.

Some progress has been made on preparation of design drawings, she said.

While the official groundbreaking is scheduled for Jan. 31, a date has not yet been set for a start on actual excavation. Prior to a start on construction, the existing site on the downtown St. George campus needs to be cleared. That includes removal of a small building and a shed.

The province?s Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities is investing $22.5 million in the project, which is scheduled to be completed by January 2015.

The university?s governing council gave the final stamp of approval to build the centre in late November.

Onyx, Bayer's Next Cancer Drug Shows Slim Survival Edge | Xconomy

Luke Timmerman1/17/12

Bayer and Onyx Pharmaceuticals looked like they hit gold last fall, when a?study of 760 patients showed that one of their new cancer drugs was able to help patients with colorectal cancer live?longer.

Today, researchers got the first glimpse at the detailed results, and while it?s encouraging news for the companies and for patients, it?s not exactly something to shout about from the?rooftops.

The new drug from Bayer and South San Francisco-based Onyx (NASDAQ: ONXX) showed that it helped patients live a?median time of 6.4 months with colorectal cancer that had spread through the body, compared with a?median of five months for those in the placebo group. The new drug, regorafenib, had significant side effects like almost all cancer drugs. About 17 percent of patients had moderate to severe skin reactions on their hands and feet, while 15 percent had significant fatigue, and 8?percent had significant diarrhea, researchers said today at the American Society of Clinical Oncology?s gastrointestinal cancer symposium in San Francisco. There was nothing new or unexpected in the drug?s safety profile, scientists said.

Onyx and Bayer have long worked together to co-market sorafenib (Nexavar) as a?treatment for kidney and liver cancers, but the relationship was frayed recently by litigation over who owns the second, related compound. The companies settled that dispute in October, in an arrangement where Onyx got a $160 million one-time payment and will get a?20 percent royalty on worldwide sales of the new drug. That royalty stream suddenly looked valuable two weeks later when an independent monitoring committee looked at the data of the ongoing study known as Correct, saw the survival edge, and recommended the study be halted earlier than planned so all patients could get the experimental medicine.

Onyx Pharmaceuticals CEO Tony?Coles

Analysts are now projecting regorafenib will be a?billion-dollar seller, which could throw off hundreds of millions in annual revenue to Onyx. If the drug wins regulatory approval, it could offer colorectal cancer patients a?new option beyond existing drugs like Eli Lilly?s cetuximab (Erbitux), Roche?s bevacizumab (Avastin), and Amgen?s panitumumab (Vectibix). About 52,000 patients in the U.S. are expected to die this year from colorectal cancer, according to the American Cancer?Society.

?We?ve shown an improvement in overall survival, which we think is really terrific because these are third and fourth-line metastatic patients who have gone through almost all other available options,? Onyx CEO Tony Coles said in an interview last week at the JP Morgan Healthcare Conference, before the details were?released.

Bayer said in a?statement today that it plans to seek regulatory approval later this year for clearance to start selling the drug for patients with colorectal cancer that has?spread.

Colorectal cancer isn?t the only place where Bayer and Onyx see the new drug potentially being used. The companies are expecting to see results from a?pivotal study of 350 patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) before the end of March, Coles says. ?Between the colorectal cancer data, and the GIST data to come, regorafenib is clearly on the scene,? Coles says. ?The two companies are working together to pursue other indications.?

Few analysts last fall were counting on any revenue at all from regorafenib, so it was a?surprising and transforming piece of news for the company. As Coles put it, ?we are in position to go from one product for two tumors (Nexavar) to potentially three products with strong data or [an FDA clearance] for seven different cancers by the end of this year,? Coles says. The other drug besides Nexavar and regorafenib is known as carfilzomib, which is being reviewed by the FDA as a?new treatment for multiple?myeloma.

?When you see that kind of momentum in the business in such a?short period of time, it?s unrivaled,? Coles says. ?We think the future is very?bright.?

Sunni-backed leader: Crisis tearing Iraq apart (AP)

BAGHDAD ? Iraq needs new leaders to prevent the country from disintegrating, the leader of the main Sunni-backed bloc said Wednesday, reflecting the severity of a sectarian political battle in the Shiite-led government, accompanied by violence, just a month after the exit of U.S. forces.

The leader of the Iraqiya bloc, Ayad Allawi, was responding to a bold step by Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, issuing an arrest warrant against the nation's top Sunni official, sending him into virtual internal exile.

"Iraq is at a crossroads and I say that Iraq needs forgiving leaders, who will raise above their personal hatred," Allawi told a new conference in Baghdad, accusing the government of stoking sectarian tensions to divert attention from its failures.

Last month, al-Maliki's government issued an arrest warrant against Sunni Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi, charging he ran death squads that targeted Shiite officials. In protest, Iraqiya began boycotting parliament and Cabinet sessions. On Tuesday the remaining Cabinet ministers suspended the Sunni-backed members until they end their boycott.

Al-Hashemi denied charges and fled to the autonomous Kurdish region in Iraq, out of reach of authorities in Baghdad. He is refusing to return for trial in Baghdad.

The political battle coincides with a wave of bombing attacks, most of them targeting Shiites, killing more than 160 people this year. The twin crises have raised fears of a reprise of a conflict five years ago, when heavily armed Shiite and Sunni militias battled each other and brought the nation to the brink of civil war.

On Wednesday, security forces detained another senior Sunni official, authorities said in Baghdad. Riyadh al-Adhadh, the deputy president of Baghdad's Provincial Council and a member of the Iraqi Islamic Party, was taken into custody on Wednesday morning on terrorism charges, the Council said.

Allawi accused al-Maliki of unfairly targeting Sunni officials and deliberately triggering a political crisis that is tearing Iraq apart. Allawi said Iraq needs a new prime minister or new elections.

"This is not the country that we fought the dictatorship for ... (and) not the democracy and freedom that we made sacrifices for," said Allawi, who served as prime minister in the government the U.S. formed after toppling Saddam Hussein's regime in 2003.

If it prefers not to call an election, Allawi said, al-Maliki's "National Alliance bloc should name a new prime minister," who will respect the U.S.-brokered power-sharing agreement that enabled the formation of the current government after months of political bargaining following an inconclusive parliamentary election in March 2010.

The government crisis has intensified sectarian resentments that have remained raw in Iraq since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion unleashed fierce fighting between Sunni and Shiite militias battling for dominance and killing tens of thousands civilians on both sides of the sectarian divide just a few years ago.

Attacks have surged since the last U.S. troops left Dec. 18.

On Wednesday, suspected insurgents killed a member of the government-allied Sunni militia along with three of his sons in the city of Latifiyah, about 20 miles (30 kilometers) south of Baghdad.

In Baghdad, police officials said a mortar round landed near the Turkish Embassy in the northeastern part of the capital. There were no casualties.

Ron Paul Gains Major Endorsements You Haven't Heard About (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | This election cycle there has been a lot of talk about mainstream news media bias. The main focus of outrage regarding this bias has been the lack of relevant coverage for Texas congressman and presidential hopeful Ron Paul. Now in the thick of the Republican presidential primaries, we've been hearing on a daily basis about these "major" endorsements coming in for every candidate still in the hunt for the nomination. Well, that is, except for Ron Paul.

It would almost seem as if no one is interested in endorsing Dr. Paul. If they are the media sure doesn't seem to know about it, and if they aren't reporting on it like they seem to do with every slightest mention of former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, then it must not have happened right? It appears that's just not the case. In fact there have been pretty significant endorsements that have been made recently in support of Paul.

State Senator Tom Davis of South Carolina elaborates on his endorsement of Dr. Ron Paul for President, "If you believe in the founding principle of this country, and you read Ron Paul's book, and you look at his voting record, there is only one candidate that you can vote for, there is only one candidate that does stand for individual liberty and limited government and that's Dr. Paul. Right now is the time to stand up for him. He needs our help in South Carolina. We can win this primary."

Senator Davis is considered among the biggest endorsements one could acquire in South Carolina. Many of the candidates had previously been vying for the backing of the Senator. One of those candidates was Rick Santorum who recently spoke about how big an endorsement from Senator Davis would be for his campaign to The Island Packet, "to get an endorsement from someone like Tom Davis is a big deal. It would speak volumes to folks and make them take notice and give us a look."

In the Christian Newswire last week the Evangelical leader Dr. James Linzey, the president and founder of the Military Bible Association, also endorsed Paul, saying in a statement to him, "Having thoroughly examined your political philosophy and finding that your platform is 100% in line with the Constitution of the United States of America, and examining your political record to find that you have consistently upheld the Constitution and thereby faithfully represented your constituency, and studying your statement of faith to find that your faith and religious experience is 100% compatible with Evangelical Christianity and Orthodox Christianity, I hereby endorse you for the Office of the President of the United States of America. I wish you Godspeed!"

Dr. Linzey later explained more of his endorsement in the Christian Newswire by saying, "Among the six remaining GOP hopefuls, two are evangelical -- Ron Paul and Rick Perry. But the telltale sign of being qualified for the presidency is not faith, but loyalty to the Constitution which defends the open expression of faith. Paul seems to be the candidate most loyal to the Constitution according to the records. So when other evangelical leaders endorse GOP contenders of other faiths and traditions, some of whom have received funds from special interest groups, and are not as loyal to the Constitution as is Dr. Paul, one must necessarily ask, 'What is their agenda?' because they certainly are not endorsing the most qualified nor the most evangelical. If evangelicals wish to make faith an issue, then they should take a closer look at Dr. Paul's statement on his web site, 'Let me be very clear here: I have accepted Jesus Christ as my personal Savior, and I endeavor every day to follow Him in all I do and in every position I advocate.'"

NEW YORK (AP) ? A New Jersey woman got the morning commute of her life when she gave birth to her first child on a PATH commuter train to New York.

The 31-year-old woman, who lives in Harrison, N.J., said she had started feeling contraction-like pains but didn't think they were real because her baby wasn't due yet. She and her 30-year-old husband decided to travel into the city to have her checked out Monday.

They didn't want to drive and decided to take the train from Harrison into the city instead, thinking they could then take a taxi to Manhattan's Roosevelt Hospital, where her doctors are.

"It's just that this guy had other plans, and he came out earlier," the woman, holding her infant son in her arms, said from the hospital.

The Indian couple declined to give their names because they hadn't been able to notify their family in India of the birth. They also declined to reveal the boy's name and due date.

It was on the train ride that the woman started feeling her pains come more quickly, and she told her husband to check what was happening to her. He looked and saw that his son's head had already started to come out.

The husband said that with guidance from another woman on the train, he was able to deliver the baby around 10 a.m. Fellow riders offered encouragement, and the couple said one little girl offered her jacket to keep the baby warm.

PATH officials turned the train into an express, bypassing most stops so that it would get to its final stop, 33rd Street in midtown Manhattan, as soon as possible. Emergency services personnel met the train and took the family to the hospital.

The responding police officers said it wasn't unusual for women to give birth in facilities run by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the PATH and area transit hubs.

The biggest issue was the winter temperature, around 30 degrees outside, and making sure the baby was warm, Sgt. Mike Barry said.

"That's our biggest concern," he said. "We know that baby's body temperature is going to drop like a rock."

For one of the responding officers, delivering a baby in these circumstances was something familiar ? because it happened to him.

Officer Atiba Joseph-Cumberbatch said his son didn't want to wait, either, and came out early ? so Dad had to deliver him.

Rather, they are intended to supplement a small percentage of the investment and are directed mainly to people with extensive financial knowledge. Although the growth of these states has made the funds participating in emerging nations gain much money, they are highly volatile portfolios and have also had bitter face. You can get them high profits, but are considered high-risk products.

Advice for small investors

Emerging economies that stand out are not yet at the level of developed countries, but have great growth potential. Its expansion in recent years far exceeds most EU countries and the United States. Almost half of global GDP is generated in emerging and developing countries.

But although its growth has meant that the participants in funds from emerging nations gain much money, have also suffered losses because they are high risk products. Therefore, before depositing the savings in them should follow a few tips:

1. If you want to deposit money in a portfolio, you must first consider the level of risk you want to run, the desired profitability, for which purposes and the period during which you can do without the money. If the profile is conservative and safe values ??for the user, it is better to flee emerging markets funds.

2. Never deposit savings products whose performance is not understood. Such portfolios are usually quite complex.

3. Before taking a decision, you should contact an expert to explain all risks of the product and also the benefits to be gained.

4. You just have to allocate money to investments that are not needed in the near future. It is advisable to make advance estimates, the income and future expenses, provide for unforeseen expenditures and determine whether they can make ends meet without that part of the estate. If money is needed in the short term, it is better not to invest in equities. The funds in emerging countries are not advisable in this case.

5. Call detail the brochure shows the fees paid by the client, and storage management, subscription and refund or to change the investment of one compartment to another within the same fund. Before hiring, you must know the profitability that has been in recent months.

6. Knowing the exact cost of the product allows a better investment, especially because profitability depends not only on what they do business in emerging countries but also from fees and commissions to implement the entity.

7. Another advice that comes from the National Securities Market is to avoid fads and gurus, and avoid hunches.

8. If an offer sounds too good to be true, it most likely is a hoax. Should not believe the unsolicited advice from strangers. Often, they are ?night operations? that have already taken money from a number of citizens. This can apply to any product, but more so in regard to investments in emerging countries, unknown to most savers.

Steve Colbert talks about presidential ambitions (omg!)

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Comedian Stephen Colbert says that just because his name won't appear on Saturday's ballot in South Carolina's Republican primary doesn't mean he couldn't become president, or even pope, someday.

In an oftentimes awkward, meandering interview on Sunday, Colbert told ABC's "This Week" that he established a presidential exploratory committee last week that consists of "someone who is good with explosives," a mountain climber and a brain in a jar. He likened himself to a "one-man Louis and Clark" expedition looking for his Sacagawea.

Colbert said if his quest for presidency doesn't work out, he would be willing to throw his weight behind one of the other candidates. He said: "All they have to do is come kiss my ring like they did Donald Trump's."

Colbert grew up in South Carolina.
