University of Toronto to build $58-million Goldring Centre for sports
The University of Toronto is poised to break ground later this month on the Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport, a state-of-the-art hub for sport and exercise research, sport medicine and training and competition.
In the planning stages for several years, the estimated $58 million centre will house international level basketball and volleyball courts, a relocated and expanded David L. MacIntosh sport medicine clinic, a range of sport and exercise research labs and a strength and fitness centre accessible to all U of T students.

It will also be a venue where the university?s growing list of key partners can converge in support of the region?s top athletes.
?There has been a void within the high performance sport community,? said Prof. Ira Jacobs, dean of the Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education, under whose jurisdiction the centre will reside. multiple links:

The design-build project is being undertaken by EllisDon. The team includes architects MacLennan Jaunkalns Miller Architects Ltd. of Toronto and Patkau Architects Inc. of Vancouver.
Rosanne Lopers-Sweetman, chief administrative officer for the kinesiology and physical education faculty, said schematic design has been completed for the facility, which will have a gross floor area of 12,000 square metres.
Some progress has been made on preparation of design drawings, she said.
While the official groundbreaking is scheduled for Jan. 31, a date has not yet been set for a start on actual excavation. Prior to a start on construction, the existing site on the downtown St. George campus needs to be cleared. That includes removal of a small building and a shed.
The province?s Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities is investing $22.5 million in the project, which is scheduled to be completed by January 2015.
The university?s governing council gave the final stamp of approval to build the centre in late November.
